any truth - discussion on whether batch kampung or bandar???

Bro,

I think there is another twist to the term Kampong theme.. Most probably your son(s) is in a batch that's in Form Five in an "odd" year, say 2007 or 2009 else they will be calling themselves Batch Urban or Bandar ... this tradition of Kampong vs Bandar started in 1978/1979 ... with the Batch 75-79 (4th Thoroughbred) being called Batch Kampong by either Batch 1974-1978 (Serpent) or Batch 76-80 (Uniqorn) because, amongst others, Batch 75-79 is the first batch to wear green longs as part of their school uniform ... suffice to say batch 77-81 (Communard) was also called Batch Kampong as they were the first batch to wear green shorts in Koleq as part of their school uniform ... Additionally, some boys from these two batches (at least from Communard), loke to use a long strapped green cloth bag (not unlike a postman's bag) as well as wear their green longs rather short at the ankle .... enuff said ...

Am not sure about Serpent, but Uniqorn - as a contrast to the two Kampong batches above and below them, considered themselves as Batch Pekan ... Of course Crotalus 78-82 adopted the practice of referring to Communard and Batch 79-83 (Stallion) as Batch Kampong s... and surprisingly this practice continued to this day except Pekan evolved into Bandar and now its known as Urban...

Of course, the original Batch Kampongs did not take this name calling lying down, they in turn developed their nicknames to the Batch Bandars based on"primates' " names ... it started innocently enough through this Uniqorn guy named Zainuddin Amran whose nickname is Ungka ... hence the batch is called batch Ungka by the Kampong Boys ... In turn, Crotalus is called Siamang, and the next batches are thus known as Lotong, Chikah, Baboon and so on ...

By the way, Baboon or Batch 84-88 celebrated their 20 years anniversary at OBW08 hence the banner Boonz Brothers was displayed at the Koleq Guardhouse ... BTW, Boonz Brothers is the first Batch Bandar that do not have an "official" snake name ... this "tradition" was actually started by Crotalus adopting a Snake Name for themselves to reflect 1965 as the year of the Snake in the Chinese Zodiac as well as a tribute to the Serpents ... and the rest is history....

BTW, presumably angry that batch 81-85 calling them Lotong, Batch 80-84 started to call Batch 81-85 Batch Babi due to the prowess of said batch's No Eight (8) during scrums close to the opponent tryline ... that fellow is a Ballerz and his initial is AH ... Oh yes, 80-84 was also "unhappy" with Eritens (82-86) due to some KPKM voting matters and started calling them Anak Babi hence batch 83-87 is thus known as ChuBab or Chuchu Babi while ChiBab is (if not mistaken) 85-89 and I am happy to say, this is where this tradition ended..

Oh yes, forgot to mention, if Batch Bandar adopts a snake name as their batch name, then the Batch Kampong adopts the horse (reflecting the Thoroughbred concept) as their batch names ... starting with Communards, Stallion, Mustang etc ...

And this brings us to Burungs ... simply put those who enters Koleq in Form Four and thus not a thoroughbred ...

i first heard of the term throughbred in 1975 when our one year junior batch 76, called themselves that. We were the last batch that entered MCKK in F4 (1974) and were not considered as "true-blue" budak kolet. This minor rivalry has of course dissipated after we left kolet and become more matured/older.

these days, the boys called themselve Kampung and Burung. kampung yang masuk dari F1, burung yang masuk F4 (kerana hinggap sekejab je!!)....... .....

Brother Zain,
sometimes i read with a wry smile regarding this throughbred definition. The opposite of a throroughbred horse fo example is a cross between a horse and a donkey and is called a jackass.I sometimes see that some jackass have more passion in being an old horse than a throughbred, although the connotation is that a throroughbred is better, runs faster and and a far superior breed. Reminds me of the film Hidalgo where an ordinary horse beat the crap of the througbreds, bcos of desire, passion and a good rider.

Dear All,

I have been reliably informed that thoroughbred Tan Sri Dato Megat Zaharudin Mohd Noh (from Class of 66) will be offering himself as the President of Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC). The election for RSGC's President will be held sometime in June and Tan Sri is expected to stand against the former AG, Tan Sri Abu Talib.

There are many Mcobs who are not just avid golfers but are also members of RSGC. You are therefore "gently persuaded" to back the candidacy of Tan Sri Megat Zaharudin.

FYI, a thoroughbred means a kolet boy who entered MCKK in Form 1 and finished at Upper 6 -- a total of 7 years. Since most of my good mcob friends (not the intimate ones lah) are keen golfers, I feel duty bound and much obliged to post this advisory.
